While still speculative, the multiverse theory posits that our universe might be just one of an infinite number of universes within a vast multiverse. Each universe within it could have different physical laws and constants. This concept arises from various areas in theoretical physics, including cosmic inflation and string theory.

Originating from the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, this version proposes that every quantum decision point leads to a branching of the universe, creating a new universe for each possible outcome. This implies that for every choice or random event at the quantum level, there’s a universe where each different outcome happens.

Based on the theory of cosmic inflation, which describes a rapid expansion of the universe just after the Big Bang, this concept suggests that different regions of space might stop inflating at different times. This process could create “bubble universes” within an ever-inflating multiverse. Each bubble universe could have different physical constants and laws, depending on the nature of the inflation it experienced.

In string theory, the fundamental constituents of reality are not point particles but rather tiny, vibrating strings. The way these strings vibrate determines the nature of particles and the fundamental forces. String theory allows for a vast number of possible configurations, leading to the concept of a “landscape” of potential universes within a greater multiverse, each with its own set of physical laws.

Some interpretations of string theory and other theoretical frameworks propose the existence of extra spatial dimensions beyond the familiar three. In some scenarios, our universe might be just one of many three-dimensional “branes” floating in a higher-dimensional space. These parallel universes could exist very close to ours, separated only by dimensions we cannot perceive.

The anthropic principle is often invoked in discussions of the multiverse. It suggests that we observe the universe to be the way it is (with its particular set of physical constants and laws) because if it were different, we wouldn’t be here to observe it. In a multiverse, every possible variation of the laws of physics exists somewhere, and we happen to be in one where life is possible.
