This tragicomedy was written before the pandemic and was released in 2021, so I only saw it on Netflix. “Don’t Look Up” cleverly demonstrated the power of social media and conspiracy theories today, as well as the power of populists over academics in politics. The female version of Trump will not retreat from the insane American politics even in the face of a comet approaching the Earth, powerful countries will not unite even when the planet is facing the end of the world, and technological geniuses who have made toys of science and inflated their value in the eyes of millions of viewers will even try to make money on the comet. Mark Rylance, who plays the tech genius, says he used Elon Musk to get into character because “tech moguls may have good intentions, but their egos can seriously threaten humanity.” So, it was a great film, a perfect parody of our times. It’s worth watching several times and analyzing each character separately. It reminded me a lot of the pandemic times.
