Do Uyghurs consider themselves Uzbek?
I can’t speak for my Uyghur brothers, but as an Uzbek, I consider Uyghur the most closets nation to us. Our language, which is turkic, belongs to the same family of Qarluq dialect (there are there big families of turkic languages: Kipchak, Oghuz, Qarluq). I can actually understand when I hear speech in Uyghur for more than 90%. National dresses, music is almost similar. Our religion is one. So, I will not be upset, if someone calls me as an Uyghur, because it has same meaning for me as Uzbek. I do love Uyghur people, share their problems in under Chinese policy, amd wish one day we can reunion with our brothers.

Do most Uyghurs consider themselves Chinese?
To be “Chinese” means that you are a citizen of China. To be “Canadian” means that you are a citizen of Canada. To be “American” means that you are a citizen of America.
Being a citizen does not require you to forsake your ethnic background and culture. In each of these three countries, you are free to follow the practices of your ethnic culture.
However, as a citizen, there is an expectation that you will assimilate into your country’s society. For example, you are expected to learn English in the United States. You are expected to learn the basics of US history and geography in order to pass the citizenship test, if you are an immigrant.
Uyghurs who are citizens of China are “Chinese.” They are encouraged to learn the national language of Mandarin. Nevertheless, they can freely follow their cultural traditions. In this way, China is multicultural, just like Canada!
If there is any doubt about this, go visit Xinjiang. I’ve been there, as well as millions of other foreign tourists.
